Tom Bateman

Mr. Bateman was born and raised in southern Alberta and worked with Alberta Fish and Wildlife for 30 years. His duties included enforcement work in Pincher Creek and Foremost, and then he moved into the education section and coordinated the delivery of all the Conservation Education programs. The 25 years in Conservation Education involved working with a large network of dedicated volunteer instructors. These people presented the programs to their communities.  After retirement from the Alberta Government in 1996 Tom became Executive Director of the Conservation Education W.I.S.E. Foundation. In that position he was responsible for overseeing the perpetuation of the Conservation Education programs and raising money.

Wildlife and fish and the places where these resources live is one of Tom’s passions in life. His greatest concern after working with this subject matter for 40 years is urbanization. More than 80 per cent of Albertans now live in cities. They may become disconnected from nature and natural systems. Our challenge is to find a way to inform each new generation of Albertans of the value of our wildlife and fisheries resources and the contribution these natural treasures make to the quality of our lives.
