“Emma,” a Brittany Spaniel
Why did you choose this breed? I brought Emma home on February 17, 2009. I like all bird dogs, especially the smaller pointing and flushing breeds. However, I decided on a Brittany this time as I have always liked them. I’m a one-dog person and we’re only allocated so much time on this earth!
What kinds of training has your dog had? I have trained bird dogs before with the help and guidance of friends who have trained and field-trialed dogs for many years. I have also collected many books and videos. But it’s best to join a bird dog club or take in some workshops. For instance, I participated in a pointing dog training seminar in Bozeman, Montana this past July.
What kinds of hunting do you like to do with your dog? I like the wide-open prairie landscape for sharp-tails, but I especially like to be outwitted by pheasants! The abandoned farmstead partridge is also a challenge.
Why do you prefer to hunt with a dog? I hunt alone a lot, and the dog is always ready to go at the drop of a hat; it’s a friend that never has an excuse to not go hunting. I especially like to watch the dog work the cover and point a bird down or flush within gun range. Having a good gun dog is part of my equipment, along with a reliable shotgun and a good pair of boots.
How important is it to have a dog as part of the family? The thought of raising a new puppy kind of makes me cringe, because it usually involves 24/7 cleanup. However, I enjoy every minute of it. I look forward to the training, especially when everything comes together. Although they’re called gun-dogs, they are also part of the family. They lie on the couch, jump on the bed and sit beside you in the truck. They never complain and are always happy.
Do you have any final words of wisdom about dogs, hunting and conservation? If you hunt with a dog I think you have a greater appreciation for the sport, the quarry and the conservation of habitat.
