Junior/Intermediate Biologist
Alberta Conservation Association – Lethbridge
Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is seeking a highly motivated individual with keen interests in conservation and sustainable use of aquatic resources to join our Fisheries Program. This a full-time position based out of our Lethbridge office.
Responsibilities And Requirements
As part of the Fisheries Program, your organizational and interpersonal skills will help you undertake various projects, including population assessment, sport fishery evaluation, recreational fish stocking, lake aeration, water quality monitoring, fisheries and fish habitat restoration and enhancement, implementation of species recovery and management plans, and applied research geared to answering questions relevant to conservation and management policies.
Successful candidates will thrive in a supportive team environment, but also be capable of operating with a high degree of independence. You will be responsible for suppporting the development and field delivery of one or more projects, data entry and analysis, report writing, and meeting deadlines. Your work may also include participation in other projects in other ACA program areas (i.e., Wildlife and Land Management) when opportunities arise.
This role will require periodic work during non-traditional office hours including weekends and holidays, as well as occasional work in field camps, and travel throughout Alberta.
Qualifications
- Minimum: B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Aquatic Biology or related field
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence (supply driver abstract prior to start date)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong data management and analytical skills
- Proficiency with ArcGIS and Microsoft Office
- Experience with backpack electrofishing
- Ability to perform in a variety of field conditions
- Detail oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic
Additional Skills Considered Assets
- Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card and ability to tow and operate a boat
- Experience driving a truck, towing a trailer, and using four-wheel drive
- Fish identification skills
- Can operate and maintain a variety of field equipment (trucks, tractor, ATV, snowmobile, chainsaw, etc.)
- Experience working collaboratively with other conservation organizations
- Angling background
