The Junior Forest Wardens (JFW) is a youth-oriented, volunteer-run organization dedicated to fostering leadership in outdoor education, conservation, and appreciation of Alberta’s forests, wildlife, and natural heritages. The Yellowhead Regional Council (YRC) of JFW oversees the region in Alberta north of the Yellowhead highway. The YRC Conservation Education Program annually engages over 400 youth across northern Alberta through numerous immersive camps all year round, focused on leadership, forestry, ecology, and outdoor skills. Examples of program activities include: hand crafting winter clothing; training on effective, ethical, and safe trapping practices; firearm and archery training; education on the importance of wildlife management and its role in conservation; presentations on impacts of non-native species on local habitats; species identification; field dressing ethically harvested animals; traditional hide tanning; shelter building; emergency-preparedness; navigation skills; fire lightning techniques and training; advanced knife skills and safety; lakeland ecology education; watercraft safety; winter travel; and ice fishing techniques. These camps provide participants with the confidence and skills to safely explore and appreciate the outdoors, even in Alberta’s harshest climates. By connecting participants to nature and their role in its preservation, the programming inspires environmental stewardship and cultivates a new generation of conservation-minded outdoor enthusiasts. With programs led by experienced instructors, the YRC Conservation Education Program reinforces JFW’s pillars of leadership in outdoor education while ensuring safety protocol is upheld during meaningful learning experiences, engaging youth in conservation, and promoting sustainable outdoor traditions.
