In late 2007 Devon initiated a proactive, voluntary approach to the protection of fish habitat in its south west Alberta operating area through the implementation of a regional water crossing program. The program, which is funded and managed by Devon, includes input from Alberta Fish and Wildlife, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the ACA and is aimed at inventorying all water crossings in this operating area.

Crossings with potential operational or habitat weaknesses are identified, prioritized and rehabilitated as needed. Habitat improvements were completed at several sites in 2008. This is an ongoing program with plans to monitor crossing sites and to continue improvements in coming years.

Devon participates in other Alberta initiatives with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and through the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers including the Foothills Model Forest (now Foothills Research Institute) Foothills Stream Crossing Program and is actively participating with the Westslope Cutthroat Trout recovery initiative.
