Land Management Program

“The future is bright and I am looking forward to the challenges we face to ensure we continue to make a difference on Alberta’s landscape.” Darren Dorge, ACA

The Land Management program conserves, protects and enhances wildlife and fisheries habitat, improving recreational opportunities for all Albertans to enjoy. We aim to make a positive impact on our environment by working with others – fostering indispensable partnerships with conservation groups and relationships with landowners. In fact, doing so has enabled us to reach some noteworthy milestones:

  • 13,000 acres secured under the Landowner Habitat Program (LHP)
  • 76 landowners are involved in the LHP
  • 9,700 acres of land (Conservation Sites) have ACA on title

The main components that make up our program are habitat securement, ACA Conservation Site maintenance and management, and recreational opportunity initiatives. A complete list of land projects, associated reports, research and addtional materials is available.

Habitat securement is exactly as it sounds – we secure vital wildlife and fish habitat within focal areas across the province to increase or enhance recreational opportunities and long-term protection of key habitats. Securement occurs primarily through direct purchase, donations and donated conservation easements.

Conservation Site maintenance and management includes investments made by us on Crown and privately owned lands, many of which are in collaboration with ASRD and other conservation partners. Conservation Sites are made up of fisheries access sites, former Buck for Wildlife properties, ACA titled lands, lands with conservation easements, riparian streambank fencing projects and abandoned farmsteads.

When it comes to recreational opportunity initiatives on private land, we focus on communication tools and activities that will promote and increase public access to wildlife and fisheries habitat resources where stewardship of conservation-rich habitat is recognized. This includes the revitalization of the ‘Use Respect Program’ that aims to increase access on privately owned lands.

Just cause it's cold outside...

...doesn't mean you have to stay indoors 24/7. Don't go stir crazy this winter.

Winter Chameleon

White-tailed ptarmigans have cleverly adapted to harsh mountain winters. These cool critters change their colour and bury themselves in powdery snow for insulation. But that's not all...

Did You Know...

In the past year, we planted 6.5 km of shelterbelts to enhance winter survival and escape cover for pheasants and other wildlife. More interesting facts in ACA's Annual Report
