Become a Volunteer Site Steward

ACA is looking for committed volunteers to help steward and care for conservation sites.

As detailed in the Alberta Discover Guide, there are hundreds of conservation sites across the province that are yours to explore! Each site offers a unique opportunity to enjoy nature and to help keep it wild for future generations to enjoy. Many conservation properties would benefit from having a more consistent presence of conservation-minded individuals on site. That’s where you come in!

Site Steward Position

In your new role as Site Steward, you would be assigned to a specific conservation site, considering:

  • your ability to independently travel to the site
  • any personal connection to a property
  • relevant skills you bring forward as they align with the monitoring and maintenance needs of specific sites

The assigned property may be solely owned by ACA, a shared-title property with one of our partners (e.g., DUC, NCC, AFGA, etc.), or a Crown-owned property that ACA monitors on behalf of the Government of Alberta.

Responsibilities:

  • completing a minimum 1-year commitment
  • ideally visiting the conservation site at least once in the growing season and once in the winter
  • assessing general habitat condition and wildlife presence
  • identifying and/or assisting with control of confirmed noxious and prohibited noxious weeds
  • taking site photos
  • documenting where fencing or signage needs repair
  • completing light maintenance of any infrastructure on site
  • informing ACA if a property has evidence of non-permitted activities such as garbage dumping, overnight camping, off-highway vehicle use, etc.

This volunteer opportunity does not apply to individuals or groups looking for short-term volunteer projects such as one-off working bees or events.

Interested parties will be assigned an ACA Regional Project Coordinator to receive field data, discuss site maintenance, and provide overall support throughout your volunteer term. If you or your group do not have liability insurance, WCB, and a health and safety program meeting OH&S requirements, please be prepared to take online training under ACA’s Health and Safety program.
