What is Kids Can Catch?
Kids Can Catch is a province-wide program in which Alberta Conservation Association and community and corporate partners create free fishing events at stocked ponds and lakes in Alberta. ACA manages the program and promotes the events on albertakidscancatch.com.
What is a Kids Can Catch event?
Free, non-competitive, family fishing event that makes fishing fun and accessible for new and young anglers. Some events are brand new. Others are long-standing community fishing events or part of an annual festival. Some are big in numbers. Others are small. What they all share is a chance to fish and learn about fishing, fish conservation and responsible angling.
Can I put on a Kids Can Catch event?
Yes. Any local organization with an interest in fishing, conservation, youth and community, economic development or tourism is welcome to put on an event. Typically, one organization takes lead to plan the event, and brings community and corporate partners on board to help plan, promote and host the event. Partners can help in a variety of ways – volunteers, in-kind donations, sponsorship, taking lead to coordinate specific activities and/or event promotion.
Where can I hold an event?
Each year ACA stocks over 115,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout in 61 lakes and ponds across Alberta. These put-and-take ponds are close to urban centres, making them the perfect spot for your Kids Can Catch event. Check the Discover Guide for a stocked pond near you.
When can I hold an event?
When the bite is on! Ponds are typically stocked in May and June, making spring and summer a popular time for open water events. Lakes and ponds where fish overwinter are great for ice fishing events. You may also want to plan your event to coincide with Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekends – No License Required in February and July or Canada’s National Fishing Week in July.
How do I confirm my event as a Kids Can Catch event?
First step is to contact Ken Kranrod at 780-410-1989 or [email protected]. Second step is to confirm your basic event details (e.g., date, time, location). Then contact Ken to post on albertakidscancatch.com. Check out the Event Details form above.
Do participants need to register?
It's up to you. ACA can manage online registration for your event. Registration will help you estimate how many people plan to come.
Do fishing regulations apply at Kids Can Catch events?
Yes. Check the Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations for current information on your event’s waterbody.
Do fishing licenses apply at Kids Can Catch events?
Yes. Alberta’s sportfishing regulations apply to anglers of all ages and residences at your event. My Wild Alberta has current information on fishing licenses. If you hold your event on Family Fishing Weekends – No License Required in February or July, anglers can fish without a license.
