Hatching a New Plan
Mobile Fish Hatchery
The mobile fish hatchery is an exciting new initiative from Alberta Conservation Association (ACA). This specialized trailer is engineered to bring advanced, carefully controlled fish incubation technology directly to Alberta lakes and streams, helping increase the survival rates of young fish, and supporting conservation efforts across the province.
Inside the hatchery, we monitor, and nurture millions of fish eggs in ideal conditions, giving them the best chance to hatch successfully. Once hatched, the fry can be released into lakes and rivers, enhancing sportfish populations and supporting conservation stocking initiatives. Because the hatchery is mobile, we can bring fish-rearing technology right to the water—where it’s needed most.
A huge thank you to the Government of Alberta for helping launch Alberta’s first-ever mobile fish hatchery. Their support was instrumental, from contributing to the trailer design to providing 2.29 million walleye eggs from their spawn camp. As a result, over 1.5 million walleye fry were successfully stocked in Travers Reservoir in May 2025.
This project proves that mobile hatcheries work—and we’re excited about what this means for the future of fish conservation in Alberta. Bringing the hatchery directly to the lake allows better control over conditions, helping to support fish populations.
