Type: ACA Conservation, Community, and Education Grant
Year Awarded: 2024
Grant: $22,725
Organization: Alberta Lake Management Society
Project Status: Completed

The Alberta Lake Management Society (ALMS) LakeKeepers program is a community-driven initiative that empowers Albertans to monitor and assess the health of their favorite lakes and reservoirs throughout the summer and winter seasons. The program's key objectives include training and equipping participants to collect water quality data, raising awareness about factors affecting aquatic habitat health, enhancing the understanding of seasonal lake dynamics, reporting data to identify potential risks, and engaging anglers in conservation efforts. For this project, ALMS collaborated with a diverse group of partners, including Alexander First Nation (new in 2024), Kehewin Cree Nation, Paul Hvenegaard (ACA), Red Deer County (new in 2024), the Pigeon Lake Watershed Association, the Wabamun Watershed Management Council, Mountain Métis, the Skeleton Lake Stewardship Society, Buffalo Lake Métis (new in 2024), and others. During the summer, 51 sampling events took place across 15 unique waterbodies, while in the winter, 77 sampling events have been conducted up to March 14 2025. More sampling events are to occur before March 31.
